In Remembrance: The Pilot Eugene Bullard

Eugene Bullard, born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1895, was the first Black pilot to fight in World War I. He eventually became interested in aviation after he saw airplanes as a child and was inspired by their grace and precision. However, despite his talent and determination, he faced numerous obstacles before he could realize his dream of becoming a military pilot.

The Struggle for Acceptance as a Black Pilot

Bullard had always been interested in flying, so when he moved to France, he thought the French Air Force would embrace him because they were known to be less prejudiced. However, the French Air Force only accepted white pilots at that time, so he decided to join the French Foreign Legion as a machine gunner.

Despite this setback, Bullard did not give up on his dream of flying. After years of hard work and persistence, he finally earned his pilot’s certificate in 1917 from the French Aéronautique Militaire. He then joined the famous Lafayette Escadrille, a group of American pilots fighting alongside the French in World War I.

Bullard’s Experience During World War I

Over the course of World War I, Bullard flew for both the French and American military. He was wounded several times and was awarded numerous medals for his bravery, including the Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre. However, despite his accomplishments, he still faced discrimination due to his race.

After the war ended, Bullard returned to America, but the racism he faced was too much, and he ultimately decided to move back to France, where he continued his career as a boxer and nightclub owner.
